Follistim is a Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) used to stimulate the growth of follicles in your ovaries to produce more eggs. The egg is contained in the follicle. It’s injected just under the skin on your thigh or lower stomach area. Some clinics or doctors will prescribe Gonal-F as an alternative.
Use an ice pack or cooling patch at the injection site for a few minutes before injecting to numb the area and make the injection less painful.
FAQs
Answers to common questions.
What's the difference between Follistim and Gonal-f?
Both Gonal-f and Follistim are medications that contain follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) that prepare the ovaries for ovulation. Gonal-f and Follistim are produced by different manufacturers, and they can come in different dosage forms. Gonal-f comes as a prefilled pen, while Follistim comes in medication cartridges that you load into a pen.
How can I prevent bleeding after I inject Follistim?
Apply gauze or a cotton ball onto the injection site with a small amount of pressure for about 30 seconds to stop any bleeding that may occur.
How can I reduce any bruising?
You can reduce your changes of bruising when you pinch your skin prior to injecting. After you insert the needle, release your fingers as you inject the medication. Using your index finger instead of your thumb will help you control the injection better. It's also important that you insert the needle at a 90 degree angle.
