Progesterone In Oil

Progesterone is used to prepare the lining of your uterus for implantation and pregnancy. Oftentimes, fertility medications affect your progesterone levels. You may be prescribed a progesterone supplement to make up for this decrease when it's time for the transfer. Progesterone in oil comes in a vial, and is injected directly into the muscle. Some clinics or doctors may prescribe different forms of progesterone as an alternative.

Prep

Check each item off as you go!

Wash your hands with soap and water.

Clean the injection area with an alcohol pad and let it dry.

Remove the plastic cap from the vial, and wipe the top with an alcohol pad.

Set

Unwrap the syringe and mixing needle, and twist the needle onto the syringe.

Remove the needle cap, and draw air into the syringe by pulling back the plunger to the mL mark that matches your dose.

Insert the needle through the rubber stopper into the vial, and press the plunger all the way down to push the air into the vial.

Without removing the needle, turn the vial upside down; make sure the tip of the needle stays submerged in the solution.

Pull the plunger back to withdraw the prescribed dose. Then turn the vial back around, place it on a surface, and remove the needle.

Carefully recap the mixing needle and untwist it to remove it from the syringe.

Unwrap the injection needle and twist it onto the syringe.

Remove the needle cap, and while holding the syringe up, tap or flick the syringe to remove any air bubbles.

Press the plunger slightly until a tiny droplet of liquid appears at the tip of the needle.

Inject

Using your thumb and index finger, firmly stretch the skin around the cleaned injection area.

With your other hand, hold the syringe at a 90-degree angle and quickly insert the needle all the way into your skin.

Push down the plunger of the syringe with a steady motion and keep pushing until all the fluid is injected into your skin.

Count to three, and then pull the needle straight out of your skin.

Press down firmly on the injection site with a gauze pad.
