What Is a Specialty Pharmacy? And Why It Matters for Your Fertility Treatment

National Infertility Awareness Week

National Infertility Awareness Week

More than medication — how Prima supports the whole fertility journey.

The path to parenthood is not always a straight line. For one in six people worldwide, fertility treatment becomes part of that journey — bringing with it a mix of hope, uncertainty, and resilience that's difficult to put into words.

National Infertility Awareness Week is a time to acknowledge that complexity. To break silence. To reduce stigma. And to recognize the providers, communities, and yes, pharmacies, that stand alongside patients every step of the way.

We've filled hundreds of thousands of fertility prescriptions. What we understand, deeply, is that behind every one of those prescriptions is a person. And that person deserves more than a package at the door.

You're navigating something real. So are we.

Fertility treatment is one of the most logistically and emotionally demanding medical experiences a person can go through. Patients are managing multiple injectable medications on precise schedules, navigating insurance, and doing all of it while carrying an enormous amount of emotional weight.

Our pharmacists and care teams don't treat any of this as routine. When a new patient calls to fill a fertility prescription, we walk them through every medication — what it does, how to store it, and how to inject it.

And we do it on weekends, too. IVF doesn't follow a Monday-through-Friday schedule. Prima is open seven days a week, 365 days a year, because patients in the middle of a stimulation cycle shouldn't have to wait until Monday to reach someone who actually knows their protocol.

"At Prima, you're more than a name on a script. You're a person with emotions about what you're experiencing, with questions you need answered, and with a hand that might need holding."

Injection support — because a first injection is never easy

For most fertility patients, self-injecting is an entirely new experience. We offer one-on-one injection training sessions with a nurse with over 20 years of experience in fertility. Whether a patient needs a full walk-through of the subcutaneous technique or just a steady voice on the phone before the trigger shot, we're here. Our Injecting 101 guide is also available online as a written reference throughout the cycle.

The cost of fertility care is real. We work to lower it.

Cost is one of the most painful realities of fertility treatment. Even when a clinic is covered by insurance, medications frequently are not — or they're only partially covered, with caps that don't come close to the actual expense of a multi-cycle journey.

Prima works actively to reduce that burden wherever possible.

We work diligently to investigate patient insurance, help navigate coverage if necessary, and counsel self-pay patients on additional manufacturer and lending programs that could help reduce overall costs.

The Fertility Instant Savings Program

As a preferred partner of EMD Serono and Ferring, Prima is a certified dispenser of the Fertility Instant Savings Program — providing patients with some of the lowest pricing available on select medications. This includes Gonal-F, Cetrotide, Ovidrel, and Menopur. We also offer additional discounts exclusive to Prima patients that help bring down overall protocol costs.

You shouldn't have to navigate this alone.

The fertility journey can feel isolating — even when you're surrounded by supportive people. What we know from 30 years in this space is that patients don't just need medications. They need someone who understands what those medications mean. Our specialists are trained in fertility care, not just pharmacy operations. When a patient calls with a question, they reach someone who can actually help.

"Behind every prescription is a person — or a couple — navigating their path to parenthood. We're honored to support them every step of the way."

A note on emotional wellbeing

Fertility treatment takes an emotional toll that is often underestimated. For patients who need emotional support alongside their medical care, Prima partners with Alma to provide access to counseling and therapy. Because treating the whole person means acknowledging that the emotional weight of infertility is real, and it deserves attention.

Wherever you are in your journey, we've got you.

NIAW was founded by RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association, and has been observed for over 30 years. Its purpose is to advocate for those affected by infertility — pushing for better insurance coverage, reducing stigma, and building community among people who often feel they're going through something no one else understands. We're proud to be part of that conversation — not just this week, but throughout the year.

Prima started because we've seen firsthand how opaque, expensive, and emotionally taxing the fertility process can be. We built our team, our programs, and our approach around the belief that patients deserve transparency, access, and a real, knowledgeable person on the other end of the phone.

If you're in the middle of a fertility journey — whether you're just starting out or navigating your fourth cycle — we're here. Not just to fill your prescription, but to make the process a little less overwhelming, a little more clear, and a lot more supported.

Happy National Infertility Awareness Week. We're excited to keep the conversation going, help reduce stigma, and empower our patients.
